Restore’s Annual Report for 2016

Each year we are required to publish an annual report for the Charity Commission and Companies House. It was another good year which provided us with real opportunities to expand.

More supported properties

During 2016 we converted our one unsupported property into a supported property, meaning that all our tenants are now provided with supported accommodation. An eighth property was added to our portfolio late in the year, meaning we can now house a total of thirty-one people.

More tenant engagement

We have also increased the level of tenant engagement during the year by partnering with organisations across the city to provide tenants with opportunities to engage in a range of educational, therapeutic and social activities designed to enhance their life skills and employment opportunities. Much of this work has been funded through successful grant applications.

More staff

A full-time development officer was recruited early in 2016 to work with trustees to manage all aspects of fundraising and volunteering. The addition of two new supported properties meant that we also had to recruit an additional support worker late in the year.

More fundraising

Adding a development office to our team means that the charity is less dependent on housing benefit payments by increasing income from other sources. This is essential to the charity’s longterm success, especially as the very existence of ‘exempt’ accommodation status is believed by some to be under threat as part of the government’s welfare reform programme.

Chase the Sun – are you up for it?

Chase the Sun logoChase the Sun is back!

A year ago Jonny Wooldridge first floated the idea of a relay race that would start in Bridlington at sunrise and reach the west coast by sunset. “Can’t be done” – said the naysayers (some of them seasoned athletes!) So on the longest day we tried it out. 30 runners took part and the last cohort arrived on the coast near Morecambe with 41 minutes to spare. Jonny was right. It could be done. So this year we’re doing it again, and it’s bigger than ever.

So could you join in? If you have the legs and can aim to raise £500 in sponsorship we want to hear from you. You can choose your distance and pound out the miles on mid-summers day, Saturday June 24th, to raise money to house homeless people in York.

Can you promote it and display a flyer, or hand out a dozen, you can help us.

If you have never run before, it’s not to late to train. Our Chairman, Barrie, took up the Couch to 5k challenge to be able to Chase the Sun in 2017. Now he’s ready and keeping up his fitness on the York Parkrun most Saturdays. You could join him.

Chase the Sun  is an exciting and challenging event and you could be part of it. To register your interest or find out more call Jonny Wooldridge on 07999 581999 or email him jonny.wooldridge@restoreyork.co.uk

More about the route

We depend on donations large or small

Cheque presentation

Restore Chairman, Barrie Stephenson, gladly accepting a donation from York Ebor & County Round Table

We love cheque presentations, especially when they are this large. The York Ebor and County Round Table presented Restore with a donation of £5,000 at the Theatre Royal as they were preparing for their fund raising event for the final dress rehearsal of the Panto, Cinderella. Their efforts for charity go on throughout the year which allows them to generously support organisations like ours. Thank you guys.
But you don’t have to sign up to support us with big cheques. If you can only make a few pounds a month as a regular donation, we are equally pleased. Your donation will make a big difference in the life of one of the people who live in a Restore house.  [Read more…]

Funding Awards

Big Lottery Fund logo Our tenants are benefitting from several generous awards recently received by Restore. The largest is from the Big Lottery Fund under the Awards for All scheme which will allow us to provide computers, laundry equipment, bikes and trips out, over and above our normal funding.

Other recent grants have come from York Common Good Trust, Albert Hunt Trust, and the Sylvia and Colin Shepherd Charitable Trust. This is in addition to the regular giving of our supporters who help to keep our service afloat.
