Christmas 2013

Thank you for your continued interest and support for Restore during 2013. It has been a year of amazing growth demonstrating God's faithfulness in the work he has asked to do to help homeless people in York.

Seven houses

As I write this our seventh house is being prepared for new tenants. This will bring the total number of rooms to 26 in the early weeks of 2014. House number five was opened in June and number six in August. Both of these properties were leased to us by Christian people in York who wanted to help homeless people in the city. The latest house was purchased by our partners Green Pastures Housing

More staff

With this increase in properties came the need for more staff. In May we employed Sheila Gregson and we are about to employ a third person to the support team to serve people in the new house. As a result Ed Hambleton's role involves more management – and now he is able to share the responsibility for tenants with his new staff.

All through the year our voluntary administrator, Monica, increased her hours to three mornings a week. Sadly she has just finished working for us, but we are extremely thankful for her dedicated service. A new volunteer will take her place in the new year and we are seeking development funding make this position a paid post soon.

We moved into new offices in August. A Christian businessman offered us offices in his premises so that we now have two large rooms and space for storage in Lawrence Street, York. There's space for parking too. All round it is a more comfortable place for the staff to work and we have a private area for the many interviews and support conversations we conduct.

Things our tenants say

“This isn't just my house, It's my home. Living here has given me hope again.”

“The rain has soaked my clothes today, but I'm happy. I'm going to walk home and put my clothes on the radiator. If this had happened last year I would have stayed in wet clothes for weeks.”

“Just to say thanks for helping me out during an unstable time. It's about looking forward now and taking one step every day. Hope Restore continues to be a success. Will stay in touch! S x”

“Thank you to all at Restore for the huge help in my life and for the lovely welcome to my new home card.”

New Director

We welcomed Ged Murray onto the board of Restore this year. He bring skills in Human Resources and Project Management with him and joins, Barrie Stephenson, Eddy James, Jo Bloss and Iona Edwards on the board of directors and trustees. Sadly we said goodbye to Allen Marsh. A new job and training courses demanded more time from him and so he felt his time with Restore had to end. We miss him and his experience of working with homeless people.

We are always dependent on the generous giving of our supporters; individuals, churches, organisations and charitable funds all contribute to sustaining the work we do to provide housing for people who would otherwise be homeless.

  • If you are one of our regular financial supporters please could we ask you to review your giving as we enter the new year.
  • If you haven't signed up yet a Christmas gift to help homeless people in York may be something you would like to give. All the details about giving are on our website here.
  • If you have time to give we are always looking for volunteers – see ourwebsite for details
  • Competing in a sponsored event? Why not raise money for Restore?

WE have recently received a substantial gift for the second year running from York Residential Landlords Association. Their generous support is really appreciated.

Please pray for:

  • New tenants moving in to house number seven
  • All tenants that they will make progress through the support they are offered by Restore
  • New staff starting work in the New Year
  • All staff as they adjust to working in a larger organisation
  • For more properties to be made available to us
  • Future strategy as we look at new areas to expand and support people who need somewhere to live.
